Historic Background of Tannu Jubbar Lake

According to folk lore, this was a grassy meadow of 1 sq. km, where people used to bring their cattle for grazing. With the passage of time people started cultivating this flat grass land. There is a hearsay that the local people who were engaged in cultivation work came across thousands of snakes on this patch of land and whenever they tried to kill these snakes it used to disappear.

Once people started ploughing this land with 18 set of bullocks, the entire land start sinking suddenly and a big hole was created in which the bullocks and men were gutted. This big hole was filled up with water which took a shape of big lake and an Idol of Nag Devta appeared on the shore of lake. Thereafter, people living around this place established this Idol under the big willow tree and after some time a beautiful temple of Nag Devta was constructed. It is also said that all the bullocks and men appeared at the bank of river Satluj, the place called Khekhar.

It is still believed that the lake and the forest adjoining to this place are still protected by Nag Devta. Every year, a fair is organized from 28th to 31st of May by the local people to seek the blessings of Nag Devta. During this period Chaturmukh Devta of Mailen village comes to meet Nag Devta. The scenes of their meetings are really wonderful to watch. This place is a great example for amalgamation of our cultural, religious & natural heritage.
